Since his graduation in 2012, Sam has had quite a successful career in Australian cricket. He is a talented left-handed batsman, who made his first-class debut for Queensland in the 2015–16 Sheffield Shield season, scoring an impressive century in his first match. His strong domestic performances earned him a spot in Australia’s ODI squad in 2017, debuting against New Zealand.
In the 2015-16 BBL season, Sam debuted with the Brisbane Heat, where he went on to play for several seasons before moving to the Hobart Hurricanes ahead of the 2023–24 season. As of 2025, he remains part of the Hurricanes’ squad.
Sam is very active as a specialist cricket coach, working across school, club, and representative levels. Off the field, he has furthered his education by completing a Bachelor of Exercise Science, and now studying a Bachelor of Physiotherapy and a Master's Dgeree in applied finance.
