We are thrilled to recognise Dr Bree Hurst (Class of 2005) as the 2025 Young Alumnus of the Year! For her outstanding professional achievements, global impact, and continued dedication to both community and education.
Bree has built an exceptional career at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), where she currently serves as Deputy Director of the Centre for Decent Work & Industry and plays a leading role within the Centre for Agriculture and the Bioeconomy. She also coordinates the Strategic Advertising and Public Relations major within QUT’s Business School, helping shape the next generation of industry professionals.
Her research focuses on corporate social responsibility, organisational communication, and sustainability, aligning strongly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Bree’s work addresses complex global challenges such as food loss and waste, encouraging organisations to adopt more ethical, sustainable, and accountable practices.

Bree’s contributions extend well beyond research. She is actively shaping national standards as a member of the Technical Standards Committee developing Australia’s food loss and waste framework, aligned with global ISO standards. Her collaborations with government and organisations such as End Food Waste Australia are helping create systems that reduce waste and promote sustainability across industries.
Internationally, Bree continues to influence thought leadership, recently presenting her research at global conferences and contributing to the United Nations’ Global Textile Policy Dialogue.
Bree graduated Sheldon College in 2005 as Vice Captain. Her connection to the College has remained strong ever since. As one of the founders of the Sheldon College Alumni Committee, Bree played a pivotal role in establishing the very first alumni database and later served as Alumni Chair. During her university studies, she also worked within the College’s Marketing and Events team.
From being QUT’s youngest-ever lecturer to becoming a globally recognised researcher influencing policy and practice, Bree Hurst exemplifies the values of leadership, innovation, and service.
Her work is not only advancing academic knowledge, it is shaping a more sustainable and responsible future for communities worldwide.
