2024 Young Alumnus of the Year

The 2024 Young Alumnus of the Year winner is 2010 Alumnus, Dr Nicholas Candy.

We are thrilled to announce to the Sheldon Alumni community that 2010 Alumnus, Dr Nicholas Candy, is the recipient of the 2024 Young Alumnus of the Year Award. 

Since his graduation from Sheldon College in 2010, Nicholas has completed a Bachelor of Medicine, and Bachelor of Surgery, as well as a Master of Surgery where he authored a thesis on post-traumatic seizure prophylaxis. Currently, Nicholas is finishing his PhD at the University of Adelaide, investigating ways to improve endocrine outcomes in patients undergoing endoscopic pituitary surgery. Currently, Nicholas is a Neurosurgical trainee within the Department of Neurosurgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Adelaide Women's and Children's Hospital.   

In 2020, Nicholas established South Australia’s first-of-its-kind, statewide skull base multidisciplinary meeting, which occurs every fortnight involving skull base surgeons and associated specialties from all tertiary hospitals within South Australia. Nicholas is also involved in mentoring research students who are currently undertaking their Masters and PhD research.   

Throughout this career, Nicholas has been involved in an array of research studies. These have included research in the areas of Lumbar Spine Surgery, Decompressive Craniotomy and Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. Nicholas has presented his PhD research at major international conferences in North America and Europe. His nominator described him as a “Dedicated, hardworking, and enthusiastic team player, who is an exceptional student with outstanding leadership qualities, who is on track to become one of Australia's leading academic surgeon scientists”.
